Local Organizing Committee Chair
On behalf of the local organizing committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you all to the IMS2027 Congress in Stavanger.
On behalf of the local organizing committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you all to the IMS2027 Congress in Stavanger. We have a unique hub of music institutions in Bjergsted Culture Park. The Faculty of Performing Arts at the University of Stavanger is situated near the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, the Stavanger Cultural School, the Stavanger Cathedral School (a high school), and music organizations representing a diversity of music cultures. This ecosystem of concert halls and meeting rooms, equipped with modern technology for hybrid conferencing, will ensure a wonderful experience for all at IMS2027.
The concentration of all these institutions, just a brief walk from the city center, makes Stavanger especially well-suited for an international carbon-neutral music congress. Being the energy capital of Norway (since the 1970s), the city and the region have developed a high level of expertise in facilitating international events.
We offer discounted rates at select hotels, restaurants serving local specialties and international cuisine, and an affordable cafeteria at the conference venue. For those who wish to explore further, excursions include easy day trips to the Pulpit Rock. As all the venues are within walking distance in the park, we plan to make time for spontaneous walk-and-talk activities between the sessions. We want to welcome you personally to a meeting place with plenty of fresh air, colleagues, and enlightenment.
Giorgio Biancorosso and Judith I. Haug
Program Committee Co-Chairs

Welcome! It is an honor and a joy to work with the Program Committee and the Local Organizing Committee in preparation for the 22nd Quinquennial IMS Congress.
Welcome! It is an honor and a joy to work with the Program Committee and the Local Organizing Committee in preparation for the 22nd Quinquennial IMS Congress in Stavanger, which also marks the hundredth anniversary of the IMS. The theme of the congress, “Musical Ecosystems,” seizes upon this historical moment to invite reflections on knowledge and tradition in a context marked by a striking mixture of extraordinary natural resources and human development. As we write this, we continue to learn about existing associations, emerging networks, and new areas of inquiry. In keeping with the range and speed of these changes, the program will feature cutting-edge keynotes and introduce exciting new platforms such as dissertation presentations as well as concert proposals. We rejoice in the vitality of our discipline and look forward to greeting you in August 2027 for what promises to be a wide range of theoretical, historical, and practical interventions from across the musicologies.

IMS2027 marks a special occasion: 100 years of groundbreaking scholarship, internationalism, and a shared passion for the study of music.
IMS2027 marks a special occasion: 100 years of groundbreaking scholarship, internationalism, and a shared passion for the study of music. The collaborative spirit at the heart of the IMS is beautifully captured in the concept of “Musical Ecosystems,” and I want to thank Giorgio Biancorosso, Judith Haug, and the Program Committee for devising a theme that will be so generative of new connections and discovery at our meeting.
The IMS is growing, and we aspire to make this congress more varied and welcoming than ever. Our motto is Tutti! We’ll have a sliding scale for registration fees, CHF 50,000 of travel grants, hybrid options, inviting platforms for first-time attendees, and five new Centenary Prizes for early career scholars worldwide.
Stavanger offers a breathtaking setting for our jubilee, with a fabulous concert hall and spectacular views of the harbor and fjords from the Bjergsted Culture Park. We are extremely grateful to Per Dahl and the Local Organizing Committee for hosting the IMS in Stavanger. Surrounded by nature, our first “green” congress promises to be a joyful occasion to dream big and imagine new futures together.
We look forward to seeing you there!

The IMS serves the world community of musicologists. Many musicologists work in places that lack local institutions with the means to recognize their scholarship on a world-stage.
The IMS Centenary Fund will create a series of prizes for exceptional publications by music scholars from around the world, empowering them to continue their work and thrive.
